A Quick Jaunt to Evans Creek Preserve

A Quick Jaunt to Evans Creek Preserve

We had big plans for this weekend, but other obligations piled up quickly. After a filling breakfast with an old friend at The Hi-Life in Ballard, we wanted a quick afternoon jaunt somewhere new. We soon found ourselves at Evans Creek Preserve in Sammamish. This is a relatively new park, created from an old farmstead a couple of years ago thanks in large part to the hard work of the Washington Trails Association. From the tiny 10-car parking lot, the trail descends to the creek and into a wide meadow. Here you can find a park map and clean restrooms. From there, you choose your own adventure and can take the loop trail through the meadow or straight into the forest. The clean, gravel trail through the meadow is immaculately groomed, as are the sturdy boardwalks and bridges. Throughout the whole loop, there are cutoff trails that cut through. You could wander around in figure eights many times here. The walk is totally charming, with lots of little streams running down the hill to the creek, so every few hundred feet you can hear the babbling water.

The walk was mostly flat, with a few ups and downs in the forested section. It was pleasantly quiet and empty. On the cloudy Sunday afternoon, there were only a few other people there, mostly families with kids and dogs. After bagging a geocache and searching fruitlessly for a couple others, we were in and out of the park in about an hour (and just over two miles). For a quiet getaway nestled in the hills east of Seattle, this park is great.
