Trailshot Tuesday: Mount Fremont

Trailshot Tuesday: Mount Fremont

So, I did a terrible job at posting last year. This year, I’m determined to make that up. I found these photos from a hike Spenser & I went on while at a weekend hiking retreat at Camp Sheppard with the Washington Hikers & Climbers gang. The Fremont Lookout is an easy 5 mile hike out to spectacular vistas, and I can’t wait to revisit it.

It was late October when we did this hike, and it felt like we had the entire park to ourselves. We were at a big retreat with the aforementioned group, cabin camping at the Boy Scout’s Camp Sheppard. It had been a rowdy late night and early morning with the bunch, so Spenser and I decided to take a quiet hike by ourselves, because that’s pretty much our favorite thing. We were just about half an hour from Sunrise at Mount Rainier, so we decided to explore that area some more.

The hike is super easy and fairly flat up until the final push up the mountain and out to the lookout. It was really windy that day, and rain was threatening us in the forecast. Winter was looming in the park. There was almost nobody else around, maybe only 5-6 other people. It was heavenly.

We didn’t quite make it out to the lookout. As we came around the mountain, the sketchy, windblown trail appeared… just that: exceptionally sketchy and windblown. Also, at the end of the trail, sat the sad, boarded-up lookout. We haven’t successfully been to any lookouts yet (another 2016 goal!) but I wasn’t about to hike out Sketch Mountain to go stare at a locked up lookout. Sorry, but I just wasn’t feeling it. We were surrounded by amazing vistas without having to walk any further for them.
I would love to revisit this trail in the future, and maybe conquer one of the Burroughs or two, but on this October hike, we got what we were looking for: solitude, grand vistas, and a new chance to explore one of our favorite places.

I've never seen the Sunrise parking lot so empty.
