Winter at Gold Creek Pond

Winter at Gold Creek Pond

Spenser and I have a Christmas tradition now where we go out for either a snowshoe or a hike (depending on the weather) in the morning and then come home and cook a big pot of something delicious and watch the Christmas episodes of 30 Rock. We didn’t get to do that this year because he was feeling pretty sick Christmas morning, so we slept in. BUT we both had the next day off, so we took advantage of what was going to be hopefully a peaceful Monday and headed back out to Gold Creek Pond for a nice gentle winter walk.

Getting Eaten Up at Rampart Lakes

Getting Eaten Up at Rampart Lakes

Rampart Lakes are awesome. Rachel Lake was awesome. Rampart Ridge is glorious.

Okay, that’s out of the way.

Our friends Zaq and Amanda wanted to go on their first real backpacking trip with us. We were doing the Enchantments later that fall and they wanted to have a couple trips under their belt before undertaking such a journey. We let them pick the spot, took them to REI and showed them our favorite gear, and then when the day came we loaded up in our Subaru and headed out to exit 62 off I-90.

Shedding the Crowds at Gem Lake

Shedding the Crowds at Gem Lake

Summer is quickly drawing to an end here in the PNW. It’s beginning to get dark around dinner time, all the light has a wonderful golden quality to it, and the leaves on certain trees are starting to turn. The rain made a glorious appearance last week before Labor Day, heralding the end to the sun drenched weekends we’ve been enjoying for what feels like so long now. While I’m ready for the return of blanket season, I’m not quite ready to give up the high alpine elevations that are so accessible right now. This weekend, we set our sights on Gem Lake, a hike that’s been on my list for a couple years now, ever since hiking to Snow Lake for the first time almost two years ago.

Anniversary Hike to Mount Catherine

Anniversary Hike to Mount Catherine

Mount Catherine was recommended to me by a wonderful coworker of mine who had just accomplished it. When he told me about it, it ticked all of the boxes that I had in mind for this nebulous anniversary hike: short, scenic, close to home, and not too crowded. We’ve had a busy month in July and didn’t want to spend all day driving or out on the trail, but rather wanted plenty of time left in the day to relax at home together.
