Coming Back to Second Beach

Coming Back to Second Beach

This is a trip we’ve been looking forward to for months now. Second Beach is my happy place. It was the first spot Spenser and I camped at together in Washington, it was where we got engaged, and it’s where we like to go sit and watch storms come in from the ocean. It’d been a couple of years since we’d been out there (actually, since we got engaged!), and it was definitely time to go back.

2015 in Review

2015 in Review

2015 was a big year for us in a lot of ways. We didn’t start out the year with a ton of lofty goals beyond “get married” and “don’t ruin ourselves financially,” so I think we did pretty well in that aspect. 2 for 2 so far. I guess my other goal was to update the blog more regularly, and I only updated 10 times (11 if I actually publish this one in 2015…(haha! didn’t happen)), so that was a bust. It’s an easy goal to beat for 2016 though!

Throwback Thursday: Pratt Lake

Throwback Thursday: Pratt Lake

I know our last post (in April, cough cough) was a “Throwback Thursday” post, but I felt like I needed another one to jump back into the blogging game. It might seem a little silly to look back on a fairly insignificant weekend after all of the momentous events this year, and even this summer. But I wanted ot take some time to look back on that unassuming weekend trip, that had so little buildup or fanfare, and so few expectations. Planning your own wedding is hard. It eats up a ton of time and makes you want to bury your head in the sand and hope people might forget about it. We wanted a quiet weekend in a quiet corner of the woods. On a spectacular weekend in May that heralded an early summer, we packed our bags and headed to Pratt Lake.

Detouring through Miller Peninsula–Thompson Spit

Detouring through Miller Peninsula–Thompson Spit

So our lives have been a whirlwind of wedding planning. This weekend was the cake tasting. Because I’m terrible at talking to vendors and making decisions, I’ll look around online for a while before I finally make a decision and talk to somebody. I called That Takes the Cake one day a few weeks ago, thinking they were located in Everett. “You know we’re located in Sequim, right? But we deliver…” “Uhh. I guess that’s fine. I already have you on the phone, so let’s just do this.”

So I set up a consultation and resigned myself to the fact that we’d have to drive to Sequim just to try some cake. Now, I have no problem with that, in reality. We love the Olympic Peninsula more than most places, so we never really need an excuse to get out there. Our appointment was in the evening, after the shop closed, so we had almost all day to go on a little adventure. My only requirement was that we didn’t get too sweaty, because I had to be ready to get all bridal for the tasting.

Getting Our Butts Kicked at Poo Poo Point

Getting Our Butts Kicked at Poo Poo Point

Holy crap. The Chirico Trail to Poo Poo Point. What a hike. I’ve always wanted to do this one, but never wanted to commit to making it our big weekend hike. It’s always seemed interesting to me, but, being a busy trail in Issaquah, it didn’t seem like the grand wilderness adventure that you dedicate a day or weekend too. Well, finally, something clicked in me recently (maybe the fact that I just finished reading and watching the movie rendition of Wild) that got me thinking about getting in really good hiking shape, and I decided that we should do this as a sunset hike after work. Of course, as soon as I made this decision, the rain filled up the forecast and beautiful evening hikes were kind of out of the question for a while.
