First time at Mount St. Helens

First time at Mount St. Helens

Hi everyone, here’s our first post in over a year. Whoops! A couple of weekends ago looked like it could easily be the last warm, sunny weekend of the year. We knew we had to take advantage of this, and for a while had planned to do our annual trip to Second Beach, since we haven’t been so far this year. But after thinking about it a little bit, I decided I wanted to go somewhere new and different. The mountain foliage is putting on its magnificent display now, so I knew we had to try to see it.

Trailshot Tuesday: Mount Fremont

Trailshot Tuesday: Mount Fremont

So, I did a terrible job at posting last year. This year, I’m determined to make that up. I found these photos from a hike Spenser & I went on while at a weekend hiking retreat at Camp Sheppard with the Washington Hikers & Climbers gang. The Fremont Lookout is an easy 5 mile hike out to spectacular vistas, and I can’t wait to revisit it.

Winter Solstice at Cherry Creek Falls

Winter Solstice at Cherry Creek Falls

This Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, we wanted to do a short hike that was also close to home, because, well, we didn’t have much day to do it in! At 5 miles long and only 22 miles from home, Cherry Creek Falls fit the bill for this in almost every way.

Searching for Solitude at Snow Lake

Searching for Solitude at Snow Lake

Snow Lake is one of the most popular hikes in all of Washington, and definitely the most popular to visit in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. It’s been on my list for a while now, but the reports of thick crowds always kept me away. However, on the slow, quiet first of November, we decided it would be a good idea to hike this one, while everybody else nursed their Halloween hangovers. Our idea was actually pretty good, because we were granted with a good amount of solitude. There were maybe 20 cars in the vast upper parking lot when we arrived, which still felt like a lot to me, and more cars were parking as we put on our boots and slung our backpacks over our shoulders.

Wandering Down Highway 2

Wandering Down Highway 2

We tried to hike to Lake Valhalla on this past Saturday. We’ve had such a lovely run of clear fall weather lately, but I knew that wasn’t going to last forever. I checked the weather for Stevens Pass when I woke up… okay, it’s going to be a little rainy. No rain ever stopped us before, right? We packed our rain jackets, extra clothes, warm layers, bags for the cameras, etc, and we were on our way. “A nice fall hike in the mountains!” we thought as we sped along Highway 2 through Monroe, “It will be glorious! We love the rain!”
