Coming Back to Second Beach

Coming Back to Second Beach

This is a trip we’ve been looking forward to for months now. Second Beach is my happy place. It was the first spot Spenser and I camped at together in Washington, it was where we got engaged, and it’s where we like to go sit and watch storms come in from the ocean. It’d been a couple of years since we’d been out there (actually, since we got engaged!), and it was definitely time to go back.

Welcoming Spring at Meadowdale Beach

Welcoming Spring at Meadowdale Beach

It’s been a really, really long winter in Seattle. While everywhere else in the country has been exceptionally warm, we’ve been exceptionally cold, and exceptionally dreary. Though we’ve still been getting outdoors and traveling to slightly warmer climes in short bursts, the dark and grey have been getting really freaking old. People are fantasizing about seeing the sun icon in their weather app 10 days out – not even the sun itself, just seeing the icon. Last week, KOMO News reported that we’ve only had 3 mild, sunny days since October. So yeah, it’s been a little rough.

Throwback Thursday: Second Beach

Throwback Thursday: Second Beach

I was digging around through photos of past trips to upload to our relatively new Flickr page, and I stumbled across these from a quick end-of-season trip to Second Beach in September of 2013. I never got around to writing a blog post about it, maybe because this magical place is already our most blogged about location. Either way, these pictures brought back fond memories of a beautifully misty, grey weekend trip.

A surf camp took all the good campfire wood from the beach. That’s my one complaint from the weekend.

Detouring through Miller Peninsula–Thompson Spit

Detouring through Miller Peninsula–Thompson Spit

So our lives have been a whirlwind of wedding planning. This weekend was the cake tasting. Because I’m terrible at talking to vendors and making decisions, I’ll look around online for a while before I finally make a decision and talk to somebody. I called That Takes the Cake one day a few weeks ago, thinking they were located in Everett. “You know we’re located in Sequim, right? But we deliver…” “Uhh. I guess that’s fine. I already have you on the phone, so let’s just do this.”

So I set up a consultation and resigned myself to the fact that we’d have to drive to Sequim just to try some cake. Now, I have no problem with that, in reality. We love the Olympic Peninsula more than most places, so we never really need an excuse to get out there. Our appointment was in the evening, after the shop closed, so we had almost all day to go on a little adventure. My only requirement was that we didn’t get too sweaty, because I had to be ready to get all bridal for the tasting.

Going Back in Time at Ebey’s Landing

Going Back in Time at Ebey’s Landing

Recently, we decided to try something different than our normal mountain-and-river fare. I set my sights on Whidbey Island for its sweeping views of the Puget Sound, Olympic Peninsula, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Baker. How awesome does that sound?! The Saturday weather promised to be phenomenal too – 50 degrees and sunny – the most beautiful day of the year so far. It would be a crime to not go on an adventure (I think it’s actually illegal to not enjoy sunny days in Washington before summer begins).
