Coming Back to Second Beach

Coming Back to Second Beach

This is a trip we’ve been looking forward to for months now. Second Beach is my happy place. It was the first spot Spenser and I camped at together in Washington, it was where we got engaged, and it’s where we like to go sit and watch storms come in from the ocean. It’d been a couple of years since we’d been out there (actually, since we got engaged!), and it was definitely time to go back.

2015 in Review

2015 in Review

2015 was a big year for us in a lot of ways. We didn’t start out the year with a ton of lofty goals beyond “get married” and “don’t ruin ourselves financially,” so I think we did pretty well in that aspect. 2 for 2 so far. I guess my other goal was to update the blog more regularly, and I only updated 10 times (11 if I actually publish this one in 2015…(haha! didn’t happen)), so that was a bust. It’s an easy goal to beat for 2016 though!

Throwback Thursday: Second Beach

Throwback Thursday: Second Beach

I was digging around through photos of past trips to upload to our relatively new Flickr page, and I stumbled across these from a quick end-of-season trip to Second Beach in September of 2013. I never got around to writing a blog post about it, maybe because this magical place is already our most blogged about location. Either way, these pictures brought back fond memories of a beautifully misty, grey weekend trip.

A surf camp took all the good campfire wood from the beach. That’s my one complaint from the weekend.

Taking it Easy at Spruce Railroad Trail

Taking it Easy at Spruce Railroad Trail

After a crazy weekend in Vegas earlier this summer, we decided to refresh our spirits along a quiet trail in Olympic National Park. We love the quiet change of pace we always find on the peninsula. Lake Crescent is probably our favorite spot to drive along, so we decided this weekend in particular would be a good time to see it in a different way.

Second Beach: A Tale of Two Beginners

Second Beach: A Tale of Two Beginners

Our view from the tent... not a bad one

Last April, as my first Seattle spring was slowly creeping closer, I was dying to get outside and into nature. I had lived in Seattle for three months, and been to the mountains and up and down the interstate, but I was dying to go camping. I dreamed of putting on a backpack and escaping into the wild, wearing flannel and drinking coffee, and just generally communing with nature. I sighed as I scoured flickr for pictures of misty beaches and majestic evergreens and was endlessly fascinated with the big green splotch of wilderness that was Olympic National Park. After waiting for the weather to improve and warm up a bit, we finally decided on a weekend and a place: Second Beach. I still had never seen the Pacific Ocean (come on, the Puget Sound and the Strait of Georgia don’t count). It wasn’t going to be a wild backpacking adventure with a 12 mile hike or anything, and it wasn’t exactly going to be the cushy car camping with kids screaming at 6 in the morning because a bear ate their bike or something. We decided it was just enough to really challenge us and get us away from it all.
