Welcoming Spring at Meadowdale Beach

Welcoming Spring at Meadowdale Beach

It’s been a really, really long winter in Seattle. While everywhere else in the country has been exceptionally warm, we’ve been exceptionally cold, and exceptionally dreary. Though we’ve still been getting outdoors and traveling to slightly warmer climes in short bursts, the dark and grey have been getting really freaking old. People are fantasizing about seeing the sun icon in their weather app 10 days out – not even the sun itself, just seeing the icon. Last week, KOMO News reported that we’ve only had 3 mild, sunny days since October. So yeah, it’s been a little rough.

A Weekend of Frozen Lakes

A Weekend of Frozen Lakes

In our resolution to make it outside more frequently, we decided to spend the first full weekend of the year doing just that. It’s been exceptionally cold recently in the Puget Sound region, so getting out has been interesting. We had painfully beautiful weather all week, which led to a lot of pining for the freshly snow-covered mountains that stood up razor-sharp against the clear sky. Though of course, as Friday gave way to the weekend, the clouds rolled in, and everything became grey again. That’s January in Seattle.

Heybrook Lookout

Heybrook Lookout

There’s a trailhead on the side of Highway 2, just inside the National Forest boundary, that we’ve often sped past as we head east into the mountains. Its proximity and mystery always intrigued me. There are never many cars parked in the modest lot, and no features ever stood out besides the steep wall that the trail must have hugged. No road sign calls it out as an attraction. Finally, I remembered to look it up when I had signal, and learned about the short, steep trail to the Heybrook Lookout.

2015 in Review

2015 in Review

2015 was a big year for us in a lot of ways. We didn’t start out the year with a ton of lofty goals beyond “get married” and “don’t ruin ourselves financially,” so I think we did pretty well in that aspect. 2 for 2 so far. I guess my other goal was to update the blog more regularly, and I only updated 10 times (11 if I actually publish this one in 2015…(haha! didn’t happen)), so that was a bust. It’s an easy goal to beat for 2016 though!

Getting Our Butts Kicked at Poo Poo Point

Getting Our Butts Kicked at Poo Poo Point

Holy crap. The Chirico Trail to Poo Poo Point. What a hike. I’ve always wanted to do this one, but never wanted to commit to making it our big weekend hike. It’s always seemed interesting to me, but, being a busy trail in Issaquah, it didn’t seem like the grand wilderness adventure that you dedicate a day or weekend too. Well, finally, something clicked in me recently (maybe the fact that I just finished reading and watching the movie rendition of Wild) that got me thinking about getting in really good hiking shape, and I decided that we should do this as a sunset hike after work. Of course, as soon as I made this decision, the rain filled up the forecast and beautiful evening hikes were kind of out of the question for a while.
