Winter at Gold Creek Pond

Winter at Gold Creek Pond

Spenser and I have a Christmas tradition now where we go out for either a snowshoe or a hike (depending on the weather) in the morning and then come home and cook a big pot of something delicious and watch the Christmas episodes of 30 Rock. We didn’t get to do that this year because he was feeling pretty sick Christmas morning, so we slept in. BUT we both had the next day off, so we took advantage of what was going to be hopefully a peaceful Monday and headed back out to Gold Creek Pond for a nice gentle winter walk.

Shedding the Crowds at Gem Lake

Shedding the Crowds at Gem Lake

Summer is quickly drawing to an end here in the PNW. It’s beginning to get dark around dinner time, all the light has a wonderful golden quality to it, and the leaves on certain trees are starting to turn. The rain made a glorious appearance last week before Labor Day, heralding the end to the sun drenched weekends we’ve been enjoying for what feels like so long now. While I’m ready for the return of blanket season, I’m not quite ready to give up the high alpine elevations that are so accessible right now. This weekend, we set our sights on Gem Lake, a hike that’s been on my list for a couple years now, ever since hiking to Snow Lake for the first time almost two years ago.

Anniversary Hike to Mount Catherine

Anniversary Hike to Mount Catherine

Mount Catherine was recommended to me by a wonderful coworker of mine who had just accomplished it. When he told me about it, it ticked all of the boxes that I had in mind for this nebulous anniversary hike: short, scenic, close to home, and not too crowded. We’ve had a busy month in July and didn’t want to spend all day driving or out on the trail, but rather wanted plenty of time left in the day to relax at home together.

Searching for Solitude at Snow Lake

Searching for Solitude at Snow Lake

Snow Lake is one of the most popular hikes in all of Washington, and definitely the most popular to visit in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. It’s been on my list for a while now, but the reports of thick crowds always kept me away. However, on the slow, quiet first of November, we decided it would be a good idea to hike this one, while everybody else nursed their Halloween hangovers. Our idea was actually pretty good, because we were granted with a good amount of solitude. There were maybe 20 cars in the vast upper parking lot when we arrived, which still felt like a lot to me, and more cars were parking as we put on our boots and slung our backpacks over our shoulders.

Working with Conservation Northwest at Gold Creek Pond

Working with Conservation Northwest at Gold Creek Pond

After spending all summer hiking and camping, we’ve been wanting to give back to nature and the outdoors. I discovered Conservation Northwest through Facebook, and happened to see a planting party scheduled for a few weeks from then. Perfect! I thought, and RSVP’d. And it turned out, it was perfect!
